Happy New Year!




Hey Kids! Take a trip to your local library before or after New Years and pick up a book to celebrate the New Year and the end of vacation. Moms and Dads - pick out a family movie in the media section or share stories with your children. Reading aloud is great for developing literacy skills and promoting family togetherness. To all families, Happy New Year and we will see you in 2008!!

New Baby Storytime at Main




Come on down - Moms and Dads, Grandparents and caregivers and bring your babies, ages 3 months to 18 months for rhymes, songs, fingerplays and stories at the Main Library on Thursdays at 2 o'clock. Thanksgiving



Happy Thanksgiving to all of the Long Beach Public Library patrons and their families! We hope you have a wonderful and enjoyable holiday.






(The library will be closed on Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving, as well).




This Month is Native American Month



Come down to your local library and pick up a book about Native American tribes and their customs. It is fascinating to know that the people who lived here before most others settled here, were Native Americans. This month, we celebrate their heritage.

To parents: I've tried this storybook computer collection reading with my son at home since he was 3 years old. It's really great to sit with your child and listen to an interactive book. Older children can do this on their own and it's very entertaining!

Autumn is Here!



For Toddler Autumn Storytime on Thursday 9/27/07, we sang, I'm a Little Teapot:

We are all individuals, but at the same time many of us are much alike all over the world! Today we explored this idea with our toddlers.

In September, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. We honor authors, poets, political figures, teachers, scientists, athletes, and other Latino's who contribute to our society.

We sang "The Farmer in the Dell" this week

School Storytime

Last week our preschoolers and toddlers prepared for school with school songs.






We sang songs like Mary Had a Little Lamb using flannel board pieces. The flannel board looks something like the photo to the right with Mary and her lamb, the school house, the teacher and the lamb, and the children at school laughing and playing.

Also, we have book reading lists for grades K through 8, as well as great books to read aloud with your parents or as a family for preschool through grade 8.

Food for Thought Program

Food for Thought Reading Club, sponsored by In-N-Out Burger, October 13-November 24, is an at-home reading club. Just come to any Long Beach Public Library to get your reading log and start reading at home. The prize is a free hamburger from In-N-Out Burger :)

What is the FLC?

FLC stands for the Family Learning Center, which we have at all Long Beach Public Library Locations. Check out a description at http://www.lbpl.org/kids/learning_centers/default.asp The FLC, according to homework helper Jonathan Chhiv, "offers a place for students to come and do their homework. They have access to various types of resources - books, Internet, encyclopedias - and also direct one-on-one help from the homework helpers." In addition, parents are welcome to use the FLC to do job searches or get resume help. During the school year, the hours of the FLC at Main Library are:
Mondays 1pm-6pm
Tuesdays 1pm-8pm
Wednesdays 1pm-6pm
Thursdays 1pm-8pm
Fridays 1pm-5pm
Saturdays 10am-5pm
Sundays 12noon-5pm

Stop by during these times for extra help on a homework assignment. As homework helper Jackie Lopez reports, "The FLC is the doorway to knowledge and it's up to you, if you want to come in and explore the infinite possibilities."

Our Earth Storytime

Recently, we had a toddler storytime devoted to our earth. We had a fingerplay where we took seeds in our hands and grew into a plant. We read books and sang songs about our world. One of these was a book called Whole World by Christopher Corr and Fred Penner. This book comes with a CD and the song goes something like this:

We've got the whole world in our hands,
We've got the whole world in our hands,
We've got the whole world in our hands,
We've got the whole world in our hands!

She's got the sun and the moon in her hands,
She's got the sun and the moon in her hands,

Welcome to the Long Beach Public Library Kids Blog!

Hello, and welcome to this new blog for kids and families at the Long Beach Public Library! I am a children's librarian at Main and will be happy to share with you many things about our library with this blog. We hope that children and families visit the blog often to see what is happening for kids at the library in this ongoing format. Yay!

First, to our customer parents and caregivers - we want to tell you about the storytimes and activities happening at the Main Library, located at 101 Pacific Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90822.
We have Toddler Time on Thursdays at 10:45 a.m. Please come out and have fun with our group, ages 3 months to 3 years. We have stories, songs, puppets, toys, puzzles, and games to introduce toddlers and their caregivers to the library.
On Friday, we have Pre-School Storytime at 10:45 a.m. for ages 3-5 years. The librarian gives a wonderful storytime which promotes reading readiness, reading for pleasure, and library use. She includes interactive stories, flannelboard fun, songs, and fingerplays which encourage familiarity with letters and numbers, vocabulary, word play skills, attention span skills and listening skills. A craft takes place after preschool storytime.
These storytimes are a great way for kids to interact with a librarian, with their parents, and especially with other children their own age.

Come to the Main Library on Saturdays at 11 a.m. for an hour of Movies and Storytelling with the children's librarian - for all ages. Every other Saturday in the afternoon, a bookworm buddy reads to our young patrons at 2:00 p.m.
